Day 17: Port Ellen, Islay to Kilmartin

A gentle start to the day after another fine breakfast from the B&B.

We were delayed a short while boarding when some part of the mechanism which operates the ramp conked out, still it gave me time to have a short chat with a biker headed miles for Peterhead that day. Only occured to me later he was probably the chap who nearly knocked me off when we'd first arrived on Islay.

Ferry issues ..

Looking back to Port Ellen from the ferry ..

As the ferry wasn't getting in until midday I'd planned for a short half day of riding, and this proved to not even be that as the tailwind helped to speed me along to Kilmartin. The route passed through the pretty port town of Tarbert where I stopped for a hearty cheese salad butty and fruit slice for lunch. The run after that little binge was thankfully nice and flat along the shore of Loch Fyne.

Lovely Loch Fyne ...

I stopped in Lochgilphead for a quick nosey before the final stretch to my B&B for the night.

This last bit took me into Kilmartin Glen, where there is a high concentration of pre-historic sites, such as burial cairns and standing stones. I stopped to have a look at a burial cairn and standing stones at Ballymeanoch. The standing stones were quite impressive and it was good to be able to view them up close - in the middle of a private field full of sheep.

Once I'd arrived at my accommodation the proprietor urged me to go and view a few more sites so off I went for a leisurely evening ride to have a look at more stone circles and burial cairns, even more impressive than the ones viewed earlier in the day.

Dinner was a couple of tasty venison sausages with red onion jelly and decent veg at the local hotel. I was quite pleased to get a good meal as Kilmartin only has the one place to eat out, and one shop.

Stats for the day:

Mileage 28.6
Total mileage 859.1
Venison Sausages 2
Stone Circles 2
Burial Cairns 3
B&B Garden filled with animal figures 1

Cheers,

Mat
